SIGSymbiosis Institute of Geoinformatics , Pune

In the current era of globalization, evolution of technology has given hopes to youth for better job opportunities on one hand; while on the other hand, there is large-scale unemployment even amongst educated youth in the developing countries. Non-availability of appropriately technically trained human resource to meet requirements of industry is one of the main reasons for this dichotomy.

Geoinformatics is a newly emerging field with wide ranging application in almost all walks of life. Launching of SIG is a contribution of Symbiosis to the nation to bring the future technology within its reach. According to an authentic survey report, in 2009, there were 12500 trained GIS professionals in the country. The requirement is likely to go up to 28900 by 2013. However, every year barely 400 to 500 graduates pass out from about 40 odd educational institutes imparting GIS training in our country.

SIG provides a two years Post-Graduate MSc. degree programme to open up a variety of opportunities to graduate students who aspire to build their career in the exciting field of science and technology. This programme aims to train and empower professionals for analytical decision making and in creating a potent resource of experts in this field to meet the future challenges.

In May 2007, AICTE had accorded its approval to the programme. SIG has been a constituent of Symbiosis International University with effect from 10.11.2007.

Response of GIS industry to course curriculum of SIG continues to be encouraging. As in the case of the earlier batches, all eligible students of our current batch also received tremendous response to their requests for allotment of projects cum placement. So far, SIG has had a proud record of 100% placement for its eligible students.

We continue to remain committed to our motto of ‘Pursuance of Excellence in the field of Geoinformatics’, and would strive to  realize the mission of Symbiosis to create a potential reserve of trained human resource in Geoinformatics for the benefit of the GIS industry and society at large.
