Symbiosis International University started Symbiosis School of Biomedical Sciences (SSBS) and Symbiosis Biomedical Research Cluster (SBRC) under the faculty of Health Sciences last year. The primary goal of SSBS and SBRC is to provide top quality education and undertake evidence-based translational research involving science and technology applications for affordable healthcare solutions. SSBS offers integrated MSc. Ph.D programmes in Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology and Nutrition & Dietetics. Research focus is on metabolic disorders, cancer and public health using tools like cellular and molecular biology, systems and synthetic biology, pharmacogenomics, immunology, pharmacology, biochemistry, microbiology, pharmaceutical biology, drug discovery and development, stem cells and traditional systems of medicines. Students are encouraged to take up research in biomedical areas from the first semester which could be successfully continued for Ph.D

Director’s Profile

Dr. Kalpana Joshi is a Professor and the Director of SSBS. She has done her Ph.D from National Chemical Laboratory, Pune in Molecular Biology. She was a group leader and Manager, Drug Discovery at Lupin Pharma R&D centre, Pune. She is actively engaged in the research on target gene cloning, expression in mammalian cells, assay development and screening. One of the candidate drugs she worked on is in Phase II clinical trial. She has been working as a consultant to various Pharma R&Ds like Glenmark, Orchids and Centaur. Presently, she is handling two prestigious projects funded by the office of Principal Scientific Advisors, Govt. of India, New Delhi through DST and ICMR-NIH.
